Fire Safety Signs & Labels

A fire safety sign is a sign or label that shows you direction, positioning or instructions relating to fire in the workplace or public spaces.
They are there for your safety and others'and should not be ignored.

Why we use Fire Signs and labels
Under the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996, the EC Safety Signs Directive was brought into effect to try to standardise fire safety signs across the European Union.
Signs are required to be used when risks exist which cannot be avoided by other means or controlled.
Under health and safety law, all employers have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their employees while at work: fire safety signs are just one of the many things that you can do to comply with this requirement.

The different types of signs
Fire Extinguisher/Equipment signs are used to mark the location of firefighting equipment and fire alarm activation points. These are red, can be rectangular or circular with white text or symbols.

  • Fire action signs give instructions on what to do in the case of a fire.
  • Fire exit signs are rectangular, green with white text or symbol. Position the sign to demonstrate the route you want people in your building to take if there is a fire, effectively being the shortest route to safety.
  • Fire alarm call point signs are used to help people locate where the fire alarm call point is. Accordingly to the British Standard BS5499 this sign should be positioned 1.7m to 2m off the ground.

Assembly point signs show a location where staff and visitors can gather in the event of a fire to ensure that everyone is in a designated safe area.
