Inclinometer Sensors

Sensors are sophisticated devices that detect and respond to some type of input from the environment which includes motion, light, heat and many others. The sensor converts this physical parameter into a signal which can be measured electrically.
Inclinometer Sensors also known as tilt sensors or rolling ball sensors are used to measure the slope or angle of objects based on gravity. These sensors are a type of transducer which produces an electrical signal which is proportional to the degree of inclination with respect to one or more axes. This sensor is valuable in any area where incline has to be precisely measured and are the ideal choice for high accuracy levelling and inclination measurement instruments such as inclinometers.
These sensors are available in various configurations to suit all customer requirements regarding measurement range, signal and environmental conditions. Things to consider before purchasing one include:
• Tilt angle range
• Number of axes – single axis or dual axis (2-Axis are easier to attach to a circuit board)
• Measuring range
• Sensitivity
• Noise tolerance
• Output – analogue/digital
• Vibration
• Resolution
Inclinometer & Tilt Sensor Working Principle
These sensors have wires outside that continue inside to meet 2 conductor balls. One of the balls connects the 2 wires together and the other ball applies pressure downward to make sure that the connection is solid. This way the electric current can flow up one of the wires into the sensor through the conductor ball and out the other wire of the sensor creating a short circuit. If you tilt the sensor 90 ° the ball rolls away from the two wires due to gravity and therefore the electric current will no longer flow through the two wires of the sensor creating an open circuit. This makes the tilt sensor act like an on/off switch. The ball can no longer create a solid connection to the two wires inside the sensor.
