It consists of wear rings that are designed to serve as a barrier between the piston and the wall of the barrel, preventing direct metal-to-metal contact. This helps to reduce friction, extending the cylinder's service life. As these components also contribute to the sealing function, they keep the piston properly aligned to the bore, stopping air from leaking out and dirt particles from getting in.
