What is a soldering iron?
A soldering iron is a hand-held tool that supplies heat through a heated metal tip enabling you to melt solder. Melting solder helps it flow into the joint between two pieces of work. There are different powered soldering irons that have more flexibility than using a soldering gun.
What types of soldering irons are available?
There are a number of soldering irons available to suit a range of applications. The most common are:
• Gas - usually butane fuelled and used for occasional repairs
• Electric - for regular use and maintained temperature
• Battery - ideal for working in environments that don't have an electrical mains outlet
• Cordless - portable and ideal for use in hard to reach areas
• Temperature controlled - ideal for use when a certain temperature is required

How to clean a soldering iron
In order to help keep your soldering iron working correctly and prevent the tip from becoming oxidized, proper cleaning care and maintenance are crucial. If the tip becomes oxidized or rust builds up, it can prevent the iron from soldering properly as it creates a barrier. For best results, cleaning before and after use is recommended, this can be done by wiping the tip on a damp sponge to remove any excess solder. For more severe cases steel wool can be rubbed on soldering iron tips to remove any rust or staining. Once cleaned, it is advised to apply fresh tinning to soldering tips as this prevents the oxidation process.
